Shadows Outside My Dorm At Night

While walking down the steps last night,

the street lamps flickered, casting light onto dark.

The pavement shadows were silhouettes

walking side by side, like friends

I had not seen since school began.

Two ran in front of me, one pursuing the other,

children playing a game of tag.

I trailed after them, entering darkness,

where their laughter became the rustle of leaves.

Out of breath, I rushed after my friends,

but the shadows had escaped from the light.

The cool air shushed my sense of loss,

the wind stirring within me, their voices,

footsteps echoing in the night.
