It’s been a while since I last updated and quite a lot has happened. I just finished my internship at Zemoga on Friday, and the past few days I was volunteering as a photographer at AAIFF. I really enjoyed my internship at Zemoga, and I feel like I got to work on some pretty cool projects while I was there. My last project, and possibly the one I had the most fun designing was a laptop case, which Zemoga plans to use to case books for clients. The only real direction I received was that the case had to look high-end. I took from many inspirations, but for my final, chosen version I was influenced by Tokidoki‘s designs, which I’ve always loved for their color and playfulness. The laptop cases will be printed at www.caseable.com, and I’m really looking forward to seeing them once they are made.

Sketchbook Entry 10: Read an article in the New York Times and design, illustrate or photograph a visual response to it.

The article I read was titled “Judge Rejects Google’s Deal to Digitize Books” by Miguel Helft.

Sketchbook Entry 11: Transform a common object into something beautiful or monumental using any media. Transform a beautiful object into something disgusting or ugly.

I tend to find the texture of peeling paint beautiful, so I photographed fire hydrants I saw around in the city.

Transforming something beautiful into something disgusting or ugly was much more challenging for me. I ended up photomanipulating two photos I had taken of a flower and fish. With the flower, I tried to make the colors as acidic as possible (though I am not sure whether or not I succeeded because I still rather like the bright colors.) With the fish photo, I purposely muddied the water.

Sketchbook Entry 12: Travel to a place in the city you have never been and experience something new. Create a composition (with materials/methods that you have never used) that documents the trip.

The new place I went to was the Whitney Museum. I based this composition on the Glenn Ligon: America exhibit, and used cosmetics to create the piece– liquid eyeliner, lipstick, nail polish, eyeshadow, and brow pencil.

So, one of my major projects for the summer that I’ve been working on so far is rebranding myself. I don’t currently have a consistent aesthetic for my website and resume, and I want to be able to have a logo that I can reuse everywhere, from my website and resume to my print portfolio and business cards. For the past week and a half, I’ve been making sketches based on my initials. I figured I would keep my logo simple, and draw it by hand because I have been trying to emphasize hand drawing in my work. I’m also not very big on the idea of making a conceptual logo where I’d have to explain to people how it represents different aspects of me as a designer, so I figured this was the better solution. I have a finalized logo to work off of now, and I am working on patterning based on the logo since I want to have double-sided business cards, with the patterns on the backs. I will be uploading my business card ideas in another post!
